In their own words
I applied for Healthy Families two times before, both times
I was denied. I felt that the System was working against me.
I met a very helpful staff person from San Diego Kids Health
Assurance Network (SD-KHAN) at a community fair. She made it
seem worthwhile and effortless to apply for Health Families
for the third time. Again, I was denied. I felt hopeless and
thought that it was my last chance to obtain health care coverage
for my children. The friendly staff person from SD-KHAN trouble-shooted
my application and helped me through a Program Review process.
She always gave me words of encouragement. Now my three children
have Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage. I no longer have
to worry about any unexpected emergencies or illnesses. SD-KHAN
also helped me with my husbands medical needs. My husband
is disabled, unemployed and uninsured. He takes several medications
which we pay for out of pocket. We pay hundreds of dollars a
month. SD-KHAN did not overlook our desperate situation, and
they referred us to a community organization that was able to
help us by reducing our out of pocket expenses for the medications.
